A Portrait of Others: Distance and Woolf’s Feminist Ekphrasis in Jacob’s Room and Three Guineas

This study examines how Virginia Woolf employs 'feminist ekphrasis'—a politically charged description emphasizing distance and difference—to subvert patriarchal representation in Jacob’s Room and Three Guineas. By painting the two texts, I argue that the embodied female narrators, each grounded in a specific historical reality, utilize critical distance to dismantle male-centric narratives without appropriating the subjects they observe.
